Leaded Stained Glass

If you are interested in a stained glass window, but you would like something that will let in as much natural sunlight as possible, you might consider a leaded stained glass window. Perhaps you aren’t familiar with that term.

It can be a bit confusing. Here’s why. Once upon a time, there was a particular type of glass with lead added into it. Obviously, that was known as leaded glass. But that is not really what we are talking about.

Stained glass usually consists of small pieces of glass held together with lead strips, known as lead caming. (Or copper caming, which is used in the famed Tiffany lamps.) But that is not what we are talking about either.

For many people, the terms leaded glass and stained glass can be used interchangeably. But for purposes of our discussion, when we say leaded stained glass we are talking about a stained glass window that is made from all or mostly clear glass, not colored glass.( Yes, it does have the traditional lead strips holding it together.) So if we say stained glass, we are usually taking about the brightly colored kind. And if we say leaded stained glass, we are usually referring to the clear, frosted, or textured colorless kind.

As it happens, leaded stained glass is probably the most popular type we make for the home. Why? Because it is clear and colorless. It will match with any décor. Not only that, it will still match if you completely change your décor or color scheme.

And, leaded stained glass lets the light shine through. It’s perfect for some place like an entryway, where you want a bit of privacy but still want the sun to light up that fairly dark part of your home. Take a look at our entryway photo gallery, which contains numerous examples of leaded stained glass that we have made for previous clients.

Leaded stained glass is particularly dramatic when combined in a pattern with beveled glass that catches the light and refracts it.

So, if you are looking to add stained glass to any room in your home, you might have put it off because you couldn’t quite imagine adding so much color to a room. Leaded stained glass is the perfect solution. Please give us a call at Salt Lake City Stained Glass to set up your in-home appointment with one of our local designers.
