Our Remodeling & Renovation Process
Our process for stained glass remodeling and renovation has been developed based off of years of practice and learning. Now, after fine tuning our techniques, we’ve established the following method which we use on every restoration:
Step one: removal
The stained glass is removed from the site using a high level of care and caution. We then bring the panel to our workshop so that we can conduct the restoration properly. In the meantime, a piece of low-e safety glass is installed in place of the panel.
Step two: cleaning
Cleaning the stained glass is necessary to restore its color, shine, and make disassembly possible. Stained glass can lose its luster over time from the buildup of dirt, soot, or grime, so cleaning helps to restore its lustrous appearance.
Step three: disassembly
Before we take the panel apart, we create a blueprint of the original design using photography and computer software. Then, the frames are taken off and the individual pieces of glass are removed one by one. The glass is number and carefully set aside.
Step four: glass replacement
All glass that is in good condition is set aside for reuse. Then, the pieces of broken glass in the panel are replaced with new, matching colored glass. Because we try to preserve as much of the original work as possible, we often break up larger broken pieces to replace smaller areas that are very badly damaged.
Step five: reassembly
The panel is reassembled completely. All of the glass is put back into place and secured using new leading and cement. Steel bars made me added for additional support and reinforcement.
Step six: final touches
The panel is returned for the original site to be reinstalled. A piece of low e safety glass may be added over the top for additional protection. In this case, proper ventilation will be ensured so as to prevent thermal damage. The project is complete and the owner can enjoy their stained glass for many more years to come.
